Frog Dissection (Full Specimen Dissection Lab)
Class Type: Lab
Length: 50-60 minutes
Recommended Learners: This lab is phenomenal for students learning the complex connections of the body’s systems. Recommended for students in Grades: 6th to 8th
Length: 50-60 minutes
Program Goal: Students will understand the basic structures and functions of the cardiovascular, respiratory, and digestive systems and identify their connections through the dissection of a preserved frog specimen.
Colorado Science Standards (Grade Level Expectation): Fourth Grade Concepts and skills students master: 1. All living things share similar characteristics, but they also have differences that can be described and classified
Fifth Grade Concepts and skills students master: 1. All organisms have structures and systems with separate functions
Seventh Grade Concepts and skills students master: 2. The human body is composed of atoms, molecules, cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems that have specific functions and interactions
Program Summary: Students will have a group introduction to the basic procedure of the lab. Students will first observe the instructor demonstrate the proper dissection techniques and specific dissection step(s) to take, as well as, learn pertinent information on the functions of the structures observed. Working in small groups, students will then repeat the dissection directions and explore their own preserved frog with the aid of visual guides and instructor assistance. They then will return to the instructor’s demonstration for further steps. Basic dissection steps are the following: 1) external examination, mouth, and entrance cuts, 2) examine fat bodies & eggs, 3) examine parts of digestive system, 4) examine parts of respiratory & cardiovascular systems. At the end of the dissection, the class will reconvene at the demonstration dissection and address any questions and make final connections on what they learned.
